The Bull Run (Grazalema)

Behind the metal
Barriers in the town square
The crowd assembles:

Old women with fans;
Men drinking Cruzcampo and
Children perched high up

On plant pot holders.
Then high above the plaza
A shot is fired

And the crowd presses
Forward: watching, waiting for
A sign; and soon from

Calle Las Piedras
The first men appear running
At full pelt, dodging

Into narrow side
Streets or swinging themselves up
Onto window bars.

And then finally
The bull appears on its long
Rope - taunted by the

Raucous trumpets and
The flicking matador capes;
Its massive haunches

Backed against the white
Walls; its dark eyes terrified
But still defiant.
