Poets' Graves Anthology - call for submissions!

Poets' Graves Anthology -- Submissions Invited

Hi all, we are putting together an anthology to celebrate the forum, and the poets it fosters. We cannot practically read the whole forum and then seek publishing permission, so we are inviting submissions. Ben is the publisher. An editorial committee (bodkin, camus, Ros, Mic and Nash; with Ben as a casting vote) will select the final poems.

Anybody who has been active on the forum as of 22nd June 2012 may submit up to six poems for consideration, but at least half must be poems work-shopped on the forum. Previously published work is acceptable; as are simultaneous submissions. The end of submissions is midnight, September 1st 2012 (GMT).

Each submission must be identified with user and real names.

The book will be produced in paperback and ebook format. Each published poet will receive one free copy of the paperback, and the opportunity to buy others at the wholesale price. We intend to have it ready by Christmas 2012.

We also intend to approach members of long-standing not currently active on the board, and encourage you to inform anybody in this category that you may have contact with.

We intend to publish about sixty poems of the highest quality which we can get. We may include one, several or none from each author, based purely on our judgement. We will attempt to create a short list, and reject the other poems promptly. However, selection of the final poems and the duration of the whole process will depend on the rate of submissions, availability of editors, and the angle subtended at the inner circumference by a ray projected normal to the number you first thought of, etc.

Contact: any editor by PM (bodkin is happy to act as a liaison officer if you don't know who to trouble)

So, where are they all?

Do people have any problems with the whole idea? Have we got it wrong?

Naaah . . . we're just being shy.

OK, so we've had some pretty good submissions...

...but overall the total number of submissions hasn't been enough. An exercise like this cannot work if there isn't enough input. At the moment if we published everything we still wouldn't have enough -- and really we need a good multiple of the target number, just to give some choice in the editing.

Maybe we misjudged the number of people with enthusiasm...

Or maybe we haven't advertised it widely enough...

Or maybe we aren't waiting long enough...

Or maybe summer is just a really crappy time of year to ask this of you...

But in any case the project isn't working right now, and we need an indication whether it is going to work eventually, or whether to give it up as an Idea Whose Time Has Not Yet Come...

So...

Anybody who hasn't submitted, but who is going to please reply to this and let us know.

Or if you would submit if the timing (or something else) was changed, please let us know that as well.

Thanks,

Ian

This is probably distinctly unhelpful, especially as it's my first contribution to the subject, but I have always thought that this was slightly too much of a navel-gazing exercise.

This is a wonderful place to hang out, like a great great pub, and I am proud to rub virtual shoulders with the regulars, but a video of a night at the pub is never anywhere near as much fun as just being there.

Having said that, I can see the attractions of having some of our favourite poems and poets in one slim volume, so ...

there's me stuck on the fence again.

On the other hand, I would be up for a poets' night out in Whitby, just as soon as Ros gets around to organising it.

So the good thing about being on the fence is that you get a really nice view.

The bad thing is you're very obvious when the riot police arrive.

Hey, why is it always me that has to organise things?

It'd have to be a weekend, I reckon... there's October half-term...

Well yes, I'm gonna submit. Exciting. Volumes by small circles of poets were always a pleasure when, as young dog, I combed the bookstores. I'd be honoured. I'm not sure I understand the navel gazing problem..I am just a boy in a bookstore, smelling the paper.

Oh dear.
I'll get my little sixpack rounded up and sent off tonight or tomorrow at the latest.
I just need to count 'em, brush their teeth and clean their fingernails.

Thanks for feedback folks, it's good to know where we're at.

C'mon David and Suzanne, what's the worst that could happen? Personally, I think it'll be good to have a little hardcopy reminder of the time here.

Thanks for the submission Seth!

Jane, make sure you clean behind their ears too. Nothing worse than a poem with mucky ear crevices.

No, I meant I'm coming.... Just slow. I'm coming. Hold the door for me...

Aah, good to know Suzanne.....and being an Englishman I'll hold the door open for a lady indefinitely, well at least until the 1st of September, at which time it may be slammed, barred and locked.

Hah! And I'm just going to walk the dog in the rain so you've been cajoled by a cagouled Nash.

Now then, chaps.
Brian is keen to throw his hat in the ring, too, though is internettally challenged at present.
And I'll get something together shortly, I promise.

So I think we have a goer. Even if it's only for us all to have a copy so that we can take each other to bed. Now there's a thought.

. . . clean behind their ears too .. .. .. .. .. !

Aww, Nash . . . last time I had the wee monsters groom each others' ears, they got into an 'orrible ruffintumble.
From now on I'll call my poems "muckears".

Ros, I think the idea of us all taking each other to bed, amid the sweet smell of paper, is quite endearing.

I'm glad you're only going with endearing :D At least your poems are all clean and ready for bed.

I'm just looking through my old poems. It's quite enlightening.

Could I remind all to put their username as well as their real name on the submissions? It's not always easy to match everyone up!

Just for general info: I've shipped my lot, hopefully in your direction. Did it come through all right? (I'm old enough to entertain a profound suspiciousness towards automatic devices such as the submishmachinery.)

They've all come through freshly scrubbed, ship shape and bristol fashion. Thankee kindly, Jane.
