PG Anthology?

The world outside PG

Re: PG Anthology?

I've been trying to work out how this is anything other than a vanity publication - to me vanity publishing is paying to see one's work in print. We don't seriously expect sales of this anthology to non-PG readers to cover the costs, do we? Forgive my incredulousness.

Anyway, that said, I think it's a fun project. I suppose vanity is sometimes allowable. PG has been great little corner of the internet for me over the past - seven years, I think, now - and it'll be nice to have some sort of commemoration. I was pretty bah-humbug at first, but watching this thread develop and everyone else getting behind it, I've come around.

Yup. Ain't that enough? Good to hear you're on board anyway k-j.

You are not being asked for any money, so if you submit and your submissions are accepted they will be published with no cost to you, how could that ever be considered vanity publishing? It is a perfectly normal publishing arrangement, I take the risk of covering costs or not.

But it's not exactly a normal publishing arrangement, is it. I mean it's not a commercial arrangement. On the other hand probably 95% of poetry publishing, though supposedly commercial, wouldn't happen without subsidy from individuals, non-profits or government anyway, so I guess you're right. And I really don't like to rain on the parade; as I said I think it's a nice idea and in the spirit of PG. Good on you for making it happen, Ben.

I think we might need to make an official annoucement that we are now open to submissions!

An anthology asking for submissions? So really, it's a big, single-issue magazine.

Sorry, I'm confused about the whole thing. I'm just not sure what the point is, other than for PG-ers to see themselves bound in a handsome vol.

Works for me.

I just see it as a celebration of this website and the fine contributions made over the years.

What's the problem?

Yeah, but... what's wrong with just having the website? I dunno. I keep going back and forth on this. One minute I find myself agreeing exactly with your post above - it's harmless, what's the problem? Next minute all is vanity.

Well, now I'm all for it again. Even though I think half of the poems posted here are rubbish. Note: this is not to disparage PG; in the wider world, I think 98% of poems are rubbish.

Just chipping in..

Anywhere where 50 percent of things is not rubbish has to be a good place. That is a high batting average indeed. A batsman with a 50 average would be amongst the greats. If this site = Gary Sobers then we are lucky indeed.

Agreed... 50% rubbish, 40% mediocre, 5% passable, 3% good.

It'll be good to have a book to show people who don't understand internetty things and don't regard them as 'real'. It's not really a vanity publication as it has an editorial board and poems will be judged on merit.

If we're managing 10% good poems, that's very creditable. Plus remember we're a workshop site; they're not supposed to be finished.

Rosencrantz: What are you playing at? Guildenstern: Words. Words. They're all we have to go on.

And 2% infinitesimally subjunctive, semi-fractal, transfinite, unclassifiably indescribable and/or indescribably classifiable?

I knew I was in the right place.

I'm curious too, Seth, as to the answer to that question.

Huh? I thought it was all in the safe hands of Ben and the duly elected team of editors.
