Message in a bottle and Envoi

Postby David » Tue Jan 10, 2012 6:27 pm

I'm having a good week, after a somewhat fallow period. If anyone read the recent issue of Snakeskin that featured a PG threesome - Brian, Owen and Kris - they may have noticed two terrific poems (especially the Faludy translation) by Thomas Land. I did a bit of snooping and found he has an online magazine, Message in a bottle, so I sent three poems off and they've accepted two.

And today I heard that I'm going to get three in the next edition of Envoi.

Hurrah!

Message in a bottle - it's not a magazine name you can search for, I see!

I received a quite courteous but fairly firm rejection from Envoi - alas! Congratulations David!

Thanks all. It was a bit of a fillip, I admit.

I've had - I think - two of those from Envoi in the past, Owen. Persevere!

Congratulations David, received my Envoi this afternoon and had a nose through it, fairly unimpressed until halfway through (I was reading it backwards) and came across a poem I was enjoying reading. Suddenly I thought this seems familiar and checked the author, three in one issue! So far the best three in the issue.

I've been reading my copy from front to back, Ben, and I've got quite a different impression of it. The first pages of poems are excellent, I think - I'm on page 21 now, and the quality seems to me consistently high. I just hope it hasn't deteriorated too much by the time I get to me.

This may be the best poetry magazine I've read. So far it certainly seems to be the best I've ever been in. (Pace Ros!)

Envoi is Cinnamon Press, isn't it, run by Jan Fortune. I would have expected the quality to be high, with emphasis on the sound of the language. But I haven't actually read one.

Good work, David, well done!

I remember Morning over Chibbanagh very well, but Mishearings hasn't been around these parts has it?

Both fine pieces of work.

Yes it does. We are higher up here on Mull and hear. Lovely both. Big congratulations.

(p.s. yeh, dad and I both are in next I think. It so happens that I am in this edition with an anonymous wee review...because the ed. (I assume) forgot to put my name on. Such is life..)

O, splendid poems, those two. I remember your Mishearings.

Applause and congratulations, David!

(Message in a bottle looks like a very interesting mag. Pretty too.)

Me too.

Congrats David.

(all I have to report lately is a nice hand-written rejection note from George Szirtes, guest editor of Poetry Review. I do find it odd though, when they say things like "I really liked ... .... , sorry not to be able to use them" - what' that all about? :)

Congrats again and I am now reminded to send another batch out.

Although this Sartre reference is elusive at the moment..

as once in Orléans,
that hotel clerk and Quel est votre nom?
Yes, what was my no? Could Sartre say?

Quite right! Up and at 'em! (If you remember, and as I said at the start of this thread, this came after quite a long fallow period of my own.)

I know. I was trying to remember where that came from myself, without success so far. It must have been something I read.

Congrats, David - it's an interesting webzine, and they are excellent poems. Who is the editor? Don't think I found that out.
