For Spider

Post by twoleftfeet » Mon Jan 12, 2009 6:13 pm

Spider spun an extra special yarn
He dangled worms inside your head to lure you to his lair,
then held you there ,entangled, to stare at stars
that burned cold, deep within a moonlit tarn or
watch an old canal choke slowly on old bikes and beds
and fish go belly-up for lack of air.
You felt there was an angle where you saw them all together
if your neck could only stretch that far..

Sometimes Spider danced macabre
weaved ideas that crawled beneath your skin and prickled
cold. I'm loathe, myself, to dwell too long, alone,
at cemetery gates or penetrate the screen of
myth and lore that we create to keep them hidden.
Yet I confess the crawling tickled pink
this animated bag of bones.

Spider's span is fully spun, alas,
but his worms are tunneling still within my brain;
His threads remain for anyone who cares
to click down memory lane -
where time is just a mark upon a post.
I'll scroll down searching for his scrawl:
The figure of Spider will appear
arachnobatic on a virtual wall
and we'll scuttle off togeher
on the trail of a groansome pun.

You've made me wipe a manly tear from my eye, Geoff. Beautifully done. I suspect you knew him better than any of us, but that's not the only reason I admire what you have wrought.

On the trail of a groansome pun - he would have had our guts for garters for that.

There have been some terrific tributes to the old curmudgeon, and this is one of the best.

Cheers

David

His worms are still tunneling and will do for some time I expect.

arachnobatic - a made up word in the style of the man who made up words, but we knew what they meant.

Word perfect Geoff.

Absolutely brilliant and beautiful, especially the last verse. Arachnobatic on a virtual wall!

Really great Geoff, I liked this a lot and I'm sure the ole spider would have as well. This forum/community delves quite a bit deeper into getting to know people on a deeper level, as opposed to forums discussing how to fix a broken carburetor. We get as close, I suppose, as people can get without meeting face to face. It would have been good sitting down with Barrie and tossing back several pitchers of frothy brew.

well done,

marty

Geoff, you described this perfectly. His ability to transport you with words was his gift.
