VERY SAD NEWS

Postby cameron » Thu Jan 08, 2009 7:36 pm

We've just had a message from Barrie's wife to say that he was taken ill on Tuesday and has sadly passed away today.

Obviously this was a great shock to his family, but also to Nicki and myself. Barrie has been a member of PG since 2005 and has contributed hugely to the constructive environment and general success of the place.

Barrie was a very talented poet and had an amazing encyclopaedic knowledge of myth and legend. He was also extremely good at encouraging new talent and of keeping us all in order. I know he enjoyed using the forum and his intelligence and sense of humour will be much missed.

Our thoughts go out to his family at this difficult time.

That's just so sad, I don't know what else to say. He'll really be missed.
If it's appropriate, please pass on sincere condolences to his family.

Shocked really. Barrie was a major part of the community, the "feel" of PG, and I feel personally bereft. I'm sure we all do.

I didn't know Barrie personally, only knowing him through this forum where I very much regarded him as a guiding hand and I am genuinely shocked by this news.

For my part, he will certainly be missed by me and my thoughts are with his family.

That is such awful news, so very sad.

Barrie was Barrie, he wasn't for turning, a great character who will be sorely missed.

Gutted.

My condolences to Barrie's family and to all of those here on PG who knew him.
In my short acquaintance with him I found him to be very encouraging, quick-witted and talented. His passing will leave a void on the boards which will be hard to fill.

That is a terrible shock. I feel I was only just getting to know him. How awful for his family.

Barrie always kept me in line, and offered rewards that I could barely touch.
When I managed to get a reward, it was truly worth having.
I will miss Barrie, he was on many occasions, my reason to be bothered.
The place will not be the same without him.
to anticipate touching what is unseen seems far more interesting than seeing what the hand can not touch

When I first found pg it was Barrie who inspired me to be a better poet. After many pm's he inspired me to be a better person. I don't know how you can love and admire someone you have never met but I can say that I did. He was a very good friend. The last time he wrote me was the 3rd of January. I have been so busy this week that I kept saying to myself that I would sit down and write back...I didn't. I feel so bad--I wish I could have just said one more thing to him.
In his honor I am posting the first poem that I read of his that I was inspired by. It is a tribute to his descriptive powers and his very gifted pen. Maybe you remember it:

Dead Dogs and Damselflies

A canal runs through our town.
A canal stays in our town
is the real truth.
Opaque green and stagnant, licking the red-bricked
cotton mills, ever calm and enduring.
Deaf to the constant clatter of the looms,
as the generations of lip-readers
who spun and weaved,
like organised spiders,
to catch a pittance.

A small pole-pushed barge
and crew of three removed the dogs
and things that this canal liked to collect.
They’d let us on after school
to hunt for rats, or to listen to
tales of bloated corpses that exploded;
suicides hanging
from Sunday morning bridges,
or that monster pike prowling the basin.

There were always the men on wicker baskets,
sawdusty maggots, groundbait and keep-nets.
Grumbling miserables who’d curse the barges,
tell us to shut the fuck up
because we scared the fish -
which seemed to prefer floating on their sides
most of the time.

They cleaned it up once.
(damselflies moved in!)
Water clean enough to show the sky.

It couldn’t last.
It didn’t.
"Freedom is what you do with what's been done to you."

Barrie's was the voice you always listened to ... he could be encouraging, caustic, mildly approving or else telling you to pull up your socks. After posting a new poem to PG I often found myself thinking 'Well, wonder what old bar will make of this one!" It hasn't quite sunk in that he won't be around any more ... it's even difficult to imagine PG without the thought of barrie hovering around there somewhere in the background. For me and many others, I suspect, his spirit will be hovering over PG for a long time to come! Condolences to his family who must be shattered by the suddenness of his departure.

Like Ros I've only been here a short time and in the time some voices have come over far more strongly than others Barrie's was one of those, I always enjoyed his comments and the few pieces of his that I have seen so far. Somehow the Internet makes a loss like this even worse, you get to know so little of a person, but so much of a certain side of a person, then suddenly there is nothing but a numbing silence.

My best wishes to Barrie's family and to Barrie may he be able to continue that discourse with the Almighty :)

This is my favourite of his:

"Dull dead things" Has always stuck in my mind. This is a poem I do return to, classic Bazzer.

Fresh Paint

The cemetery gates were shiny black.
Deception.
On inspection I saw clearly -
They were covered with dull, dead things.
Mosquitoes, some with wings that flapped,
wind tugged;
dandelion-clock parts passing lost time;
crane-fly legs still hugged
paint-stuck spiders’ traps,
their spinners pushed,
and brushed into corners,
ever patient for blow-torch freedom.
Dust and flower petals blown from graves
formed a rough top coat.
The gloss was only visible
from a distance.

Dreadful news...

I've only been a member of the forum since August, but Barrie was always very generous with his encouragement, help and suggestions on any efforts I posted, knocking something that wasn't quite complete into something a lot better for his input. The amount of time he must have spent helping out here is staggering, add to that the tremendous quality of the poems he regularly posted.

Thoughts with his family at this time.
