NaPoWriMo Prompt for April 20th:

Write a poem that incorporates the vocabulary and imagery of a specific sport or game. Your poem could invoke chess or baseball, hopscotch or canasta, Monopoly or jai alai. The choice is yours!

Alternative Prompts:

1. Eavesdropper Poem: Create a poem about a conversation you’ve overheard.

2. Good Vibes Poem: What makes you smile? What makes you happy?

3. Ghost in the House Poem: You just moved into your new home, the one Uncle Joe left you in his will. However, you have ghostly tenants that came with the house. One morning you stumble to the kitchen to get your morning coffee and one of them is at the kitchen table having his or her morning brew too.

Prompt: A poem based on a game - Children's Pick Up Jacks

Playing with Jacks

As I reflect on the Jacks of my life,
whose photos I sprinkled in my album,
being careful not to have them touch,
I can see the many versions of me in them.

One Jack served to help me enter
the mysteries of sex, another the
reckless life of a college dorm.

And there was all-purpose Jack,
who had the stamina of three,
silent Jack who helped me love hugging
trees.

Sometimes I had one Jack going but
once I picked up two but in the end
I had no Jacks left, just one Jill,
my cat.

Granddad's Bequest

Shadows dither
on scullery walls,
resonating bygone parties
and merriment stirred
in a glass of port.

Dormant spores and dust,
disturbed by zephyrs,
ignite a spectral light,
revealing pallid traces.

Plagued by memories
and rings of roses,
children stare and sing
half-forgotten rhymes.

They remember pox
and sit by hearths,
but feel no chill nor
search for embers
in the grate;

they hear claws and feet,
undertakers on the stairs,
rats behind close doors
chewing contagious rags.

A new For Sale sign
confirms their dereliction
as willows weep
over inscribed granite,
tilted in the family plot.
