Re: canals

Oh lord, I've never gorn and left ings in there have I? Cardinal sin. I'm always telling people off for that. *goes back and re-reads*. Yes, you're quite right. I'll allow myself 'mornings' as 'morns' is archaic, but I'll have to question the others. People are divided on the Hamlet quote (I've post...

Re: Hello

Hi Sharra. A very small amount of cash trickles in every six months in the form of royalties cheques for a couple of novels and a poetry collection, so whilst I'm not quite in JK Rowling's league (yet) I keep trying. 8)

Re: canals

Brian, I'll make a note to look out for Joanne Kyger's writing. Thanks for the tip. David, ain't that always the way? I often want to re-write other people's poems to make them the way they should be, but if I did that, they'd be my poems not the poet's. However, I think you're right about the tone....

Hello

Hello! I'm delph_ambi, aka Catherine Edmunds. I'm a musician by profession, a writer for fun (and cash) and an artist at heart. This looks like a fabulous forum. I used to get kicked off forums all the time for refusing to say "wow!!!!" or "thank you for sharing!" but I'm confident this won't be a p...

Re: garden

Thanks Ros. Yes, probably a bit too complex for a woodcut, but it might work as an engraving. I'll pop along and say 'hello' in the appropriate place forthwith :)

Re: canals

Joanne Kyger? No. Don't know her. brb. Right, I just popped over to YouTube and watched her read some stuff. No, no, no. Not me at all. If I were a Californian Zen Buddhist... no, not even then. BUT people remind people of people for the most abstruse of reasons, so there you go. My main poetic infl...

Re: canals

Thanks Geoff. Some useful suggestions there.

I tend either to use capitals 'correctly' or not at all, hence 'honeywell street'. If I'd capitalised the place name, I would have felt duty bound to capitalise starts of sentences too, which to my mind would have been intrusive in this particular poem.

canals she lived by the canal – a quagmire with views of the gasometers, rising out of the mist or smog she liked smog; it matched her bruised mood most mornings trudging along honeywell street to work to sleep perchance to dream of a time when the waterway held barges, longboats, narrowboats, supe...

Re: Not Exploding

I love 'Small things like letters, / numbers like children' precisely because of the confusing syntax, which for me adds to the cacophony the narrator is trying to stop. However, the repetition of 'numbers or letters' in line four doesn't work for me in such a short poem. I would use something like ...
