Re: In Bloom

Love this close-up phtography, very classical. It makes me wonder why I need to learn drawing. Ha! Know exactly what you mean, Lake. I know I could never get this fabulous effect by drawing; but then I stop and realise there are things I can draw that a photographer simply wouldn't be able to do. T...

Re: Present

I hope he's called Jason, as he seems to be meditating on the golden fleece.

Well-proportioned, though his right hand is more convincing than his left. Hands are right buggers to draw, aren't they.

Re: Seeing through the fog

If I photograph something I've done in black ink on white paper and it comes out looking too blue, I simply click on the 'black and white' option in the 'effects' menu of my (very basic) photo editor. Having said that, the blue is effective here, so I wouldn't worry about it. Thought you said you co...

Re: aqua

Thanks Marten. It's all about the water really, rather than the duck, so I'm pleased the water's working for you.

Re: aqua

Thanks Lake. I started with the water in the top left corner of the picture (as I'm right handed) and worked across and down, much as I'd do if I were writing, I suppose. Makes the process seem a bit mechanical, but I had the effect I wanted in my head having experimented with this sort of technique...

Thanks Mic. The water was the main thing for me. The duck was there to give context.

Re: Empirical Magazine

Thank you Jane! I've had to sign a contract for this one giving them rights to the poem for the time being, so can't post it anywhere for now unfortunately. That's the one down side to paying markets, of course. Nice for the poet to get financial reward, but often harder for the casual reader to com...

I'm delighted to have had a poem accepted for Empirical Magazine , who describe themselves thus: 'A literary and current affairs magazine with the openness and pioneering spirit of the Pacific Northwest, Empirical aspires for truth by boldly introducing thought-provoking points of view and new parad...

Re: porcelain figurine with chipped foot

Thanks Lake.

Drawing is certainly the thing I enjoy most, especially portraits, but I also do a fair bit of painting in acrylics. Used to do oils. Never managed to master watercolours.

Re: porcelain figurine with chipped foot

Thanks Mac. I think the eyes are a bit weird. It's as if the whites are dark, and the pupils are white. Presumably the artist who painted them onto the figurine in the first place was going for the effect of a glint in the eye. It sort of works, but I'm not sure why or how.

Re: porcelain figurine with chipped foot

Thanks Marten. It was an interesting one to do as the figurine is only three inches high, but the picture's nearer eighteen. I decided doing it actual size would be too fiddly.

Re: Rhythem of Autumn

Sweet! Lovely conversation going on there between the sparrow and the ladybird. The fruits look like quinces.

Only thing wrong with it is the spelling of the title (rhythm, not rhythem) - the artwork is delightful.

Re: Mary Beard

Thanks for the link, Mic. That Brick woman really is ghastly (along with AA Gill, of course). I loved the way Mary cycled around Rome in that bright red jacket looking like a wildly eccentric English woman abroad, stopping off to enthuse so infectiously about all the places she visited. Simply wonde...
